Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson: A book review by Deepika Tulsyan

Truly Devious: it is the first part of the series there are three more parts after truly devious and it is one of the best murder-mystery novel I have come across. though it was my first time reading a Maureen Johnson novel and I must tell you, this book is really a good novel for those who are into crime, mystery genre. The best thing about this book is the proper proportion of information regarding both the past and the present and especially the riddle.

Ellingham academy is a school for only prodigies which is situated in Vermont and the school was built by albert Ellingham but soon after albert Ellingham’s wife and daughter got kidnapped and at the same time one of the student of Ellingham went missing. And the kidnapper sent a mocking riddle under the name of truly devious. Years after the kidnapping Stevie came to Ellingham she had a great interest in crime and she always wanted to solve the Ellingham kidnapping case. The rest of the book is about how Stevie tried to uncover the truth behind the Ellingham case but soon a miss happening happened which made the whole scenario a lot more complicated.

The theme and setting created by Johnson is commendable. The character development of the protagonist is steady. The blurb of the book is amazing. The pace of the book is perfect. The balance between description and dialogue is up to the mark some of the dialogues are really worth reading twice.

The versatile Johnson is no stranger to suspense and this twisty thriller will leave plenty of reader anxious for more. Johnson choice of word is astral. just two word: Must read.

Look! A riddle! Time for fun!

Should we use a rope or gun?

Knives are sharp and gleam so pretty

Poison’s slow, which is a pity

Fire is festive, drowning’s slow

Hanging’s a ropy, nasty fall

A car colliding with a wall

Bombs make a very jolly noise

Such ways to punish naughty boys!

What shall we use? We can’t decide

Just like you cannot run or hide

Ha ha.

Truly,

Devious
